Although the outcome was not what I had hoped for I am extremely grateful to Sam Brodbeck at the Telegraph for looking into what was for me a confusing issue.

The staff at Mercer have been helpful throughout and I hope they don't feel too bad when I tell them that at this stage I really don't want to shop around for the best deal. Time is not on my side. If I'm going to gain anything at all from this annuity it had better start paying me out soon.
Nobody has said what happens to the 55K if I die before an annuity is bought.
