Oh dear, yesterday I offended someone in the Wisbech on-line discussion group. I'm not certain precisely what his swipe was provoked by but, although this man did not express any reason for the statement he made it was clearly aimed at me.
That's me told good and proper. I've been savaged by a dead sheep, as my heroine of the 1980s might say.
Capitalism certainly got those cotton mills flourishing, not sure if Clarkson and Wilberforce would agree it assisted freedom. More recently the profits of Nike came under scrutiny and I doubt the child labour share the Wisbech view of corporate responsibility and the social mobility it delivers. Progress is just too vague to bother with in any depth. He could mean the mass clearing of the Amazon was achieved more quickly under corporate capitalist energy. The recent trading of toxic eggs worldwide would certainly not have happened without the global capitalist organisations necessary to disguise who is selling what where.
To hold his view he must be a GFC denier. He must also place the economy and the pursuit of growth above all else. As those who have read my Australian blog will know I prefer to lean towards "Prosperity without Growth," a proposition abhorrent to capitalists.
The man in question holds office in Wisbech, and so it must be time for me to leave.
After the life I've had I really don't need to live among people in love with capitalism. People with no critical faculties working. People wedded to one political party. This man goes even further right than most Tories I've known, in that he interprets any hint of compassion as "left of centre".
Talking to locals I realise that debate and discussion are not welcome in Wisbech. A number of people use the phrase, "I'm not a racist but, I was born and bred in Wisbech ..." they then proceed to state why certain things must happen (because they've always been done that way) and other things must never be considered (because we tried it here once and it didn't work)
Not my cup of Rooibos at all.
